50th Annual Harpers Ferry and Bolivar Olde Tyme Christmas Goes on Despite the Pandemic

Despite the rising COVID-19 cases in Jefferson and Berkeley County, West Virginia, the Olde Tyme Christmas opened on December 5, 2020. Neighboring Berkeley County is in the red zone with a COVID-19 positivity rate of 8 percent or greater. Jefferson County's positivity rate is between 5 and 7.9 percent.

Of those in attendance on Friday, the majority wore face masks. The Corporation of Harpers Ferry had reminders and signs posted throughout Lower Town Harpers Ferry. There were also hand sanitizers located in wooden boxes throughout the town.

A sign of the times. These hand sanitizer boxes were available, and the sign served as a reminder to be COVID responsible with social distance and wearing a mask.

As for parking, expect to pay for it unless you have access to a resident parking spot. You can park at the visitors center on Shoreline. While there is a fee, you have access to a free shuttle to lower Harpers Ferry. You should check the times of the last shuttle. It could be quite a hike in the dark.

The event held something for everyone. Every day is different, so be sure to check the schedule at www.harpersferryotc.com. On Friday, there was music, food, and Santa ClausBesides Santa Claus’s visit, the 19thcentury blacksmith demonstrations by Art’s Anvil was a popular activity. Art says, “You can find me at some craft shows and demonstrating for school field trips.”

This year Santa Claus is at the gazebo on Washington Street. Parents, be mindful if you are walking from the lower part of town. It is approximately a mile walk up a steep hill with no shuttle offered. Santa is responsible for the pandemic. He is wearing a clear plastic face shield, and the children are not allowed to sit on his lap. The children can sit in the chair next to Santa.

If you missed the festivities this weekend, there is still a chance to go to the historic Harpers Ferry. Olde Tyme Christmas will take place next weekend on December 12 and 13. See the schedule on the event's website.
